Islam places great emphasis on the rights of parents, commanding kindness, respect, and obedience to them. Allah says in the Quran, “And We’ve enjoined upon man (care) for his parents. His mother carried him in weakness upon weakness, and his weaning is in two times. Be thankful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the final destination. ” **( Surah Luqman 14).
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) also stressed their status in a hadith: “A man asked the Prophet, ‘ Who’s most meritorious of my good company?’ The Prophet replied, ‘ Your mother .’ The man asked, ‘Also, who?’ The Prophet said, ‘ Your mother .’ The man asked again, ‘Also, who?’ The Prophet said, ‘ Your mother .’ The man asked again, ‘Also, who?’ The Prophet said, ‘ also your father.’” **( Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim).
Parents are a gateway to Allah’s mercy, and serving them is an act of devotion.
