Shab-e-Barat: A Night of Blessings and Mercy

Shab-e-Barat, also known as Laylatul Bara’ah (Night of Salvation) or Laylatul Maghfirah (Night of Forgiveness), is a night filled with blessings and mercy. It is believed to be a night when destinies for the upcoming year, including life, death, and sustenance, are decreed. Allah says in the Quran, “On this blessed night, every wise matter is decreed” (Surah Dukhan, Ayat 4). This night is also referred to as Laylatul Mubarak, and it is believed that on this night, every wise deed and the conditions for the entire year are recorded, from birth to death, health to sickness, and abundance to distress.

The History of Shab-e-Barat:

The 15th night of Shaban is considered a night of immense virtue, as it is believed that the fate of every human is determined on this night. Though not explicitly mentioned in the Quran, a hadith narrated by Aisha (R.A.) tells us that Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.W) said, “On this night, the names of those who are born and those who will die in the coming year are written, and sustenance is decreed.” It is also said that Allah asks, “Is there anyone seeking forgiveness so that I may forgive them? Is there anyone asking for sustenance so that I may provide for them?” This continues until dawn, making it a night of great spiritual opportunity.

Fasting on the 15th of Shaban:

While fasting on the 15th of Shaban is not explicitly mentioned in the Quran or hadith, it is encouraged to fast during the month of Shaban. The Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.W) was known to fast during this month, particularly on the 13th, 14th, and 15th. However, calling the fast on Shab-e-Barat specifically a Sunnah or Mustahabb (recommended) is not accurate, according to many scholars. The virtue of fasting during the month of Shaban is well-documented, but fasting on the 28th, 29th, and 30th of Shaban is discouraged to avoid combining it with Ramadan.

Dua for Shab-e-Barat:

Shaban is known as the month of forgiveness, and special Duas of Istighfar (seeking forgiveness) are encouraged during this time. One of the Duas for Shab-e-Barat, as narrated in Sunan Abi Dawood (Hadith 1428), is: “O Allah, I seek refuge in Your pleasure from Your displeasure, and in Your forgiveness from Your punishment.” Additionally, there is a special prayer known as Salat-ul-Khair, consisting of 100 rakats, which is performed after Isha on Shab-e-Barat. It is said that those who offer this prayer will have their needs fulfilled by Allah, as reported by Hassan Basri from 30 companions of the Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.W).

Shab-e-Barat Nawafil:

Given the significance of Shab-e-Barat, it is encouraged to engage in extra worship, including reciting the Quran, offering Nawafil (voluntary prayers), and performing dhikr (remembrance of Allah). Hazrat Ali Murtaza (R.A.) narrated that the Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.W) said, “When the 15th night of Shaban comes, stand in prayer and worship, for it is a blessed night.” Imam Jafar Sadiq also emphasized that this night is second only to Laylatul Qadr in its importance, urging believers to seek closeness to Allah.

Imam Zayn al-Abidin (R.A.) said that anyone who spends this night in worship, asking for forgiveness, will have a heart that remains alive on the Day of Judgment when all other hearts will be in distress. One of the Nawafil prayers for this night includes eight rakats, after which Istighfar should be recited to repent for sins.

Shab-e-Barat Quotes:

Here are some famous quotes regarding Shab-e-Barat:

  • “Allah, You have given me a blessed life and a blessed evening; please make my future bright.”
  • “On this incredible night, focus on your prayers, be thankful to Allah, and offer Nafl prayers.”
  • “Take time to forgive those who have wronged you, intentionally or unintentionally, and remember them in your prayers.”
  • “Allah, this is a night of exceptional devotion; make everything blessed for me and my family.”
  • “There is no love without forgiveness, and no forgiveness without love. Remember to forgive, and Allah will reward you greatly.”

Shab-e-Barat is a night to seek Allah’s mercy, forgive others, and perform acts of worship to gain spiritual rewards and blessings for the coming year.
