The Significance of Hajj:

Hajj, the pilgrimage to Mecca, holds great importance in Islam. The month of Dhu al-Hijjah, the last month of the Islamic calendar, is particularly significant, with the first ten days being especially important for worship. Hajj refers to the specific acts of worship performed by pilgrims visiting Mecca, and these rituals are known as the rites of Hajj. In Islam, Hajj is one of the five pillars and is a once-in-a-lifetime obligation for those who are financially and physically able. The Quran identifies Hajj as the fifth and final pillar of Islam.

The Rituals of Hajj:

The rituals begin on the 8th of Dhu al-Hijjah, known as Yawm al-Tarwiyah. On this day, pilgrims perform Ghusl (a full-body purification) and don the Ihram (the sacred state of purity). Pilgrims also recite specific prayers while in Mina. The 9th of Dhu al-Hijjah, the second day of Hajj, is the Day of Arafah, the most important day of the pilgrimage. Pilgrims gather at the Plain of Arafat, where they perform the central ritual, Waqf Arafat, praying and seeking forgiveness. After sunset, pilgrims proceed to Muzdalifah to spend the night in prayer.

The third day, the 10th of Dhu al-Hijjah, is known as the Day of Nahr and coincides with Eid al-Adha. Due to the significance of the Hajj rituals, pilgrims perform the Eid prayers differently from others. On this day, they stone the Jamrat al-Aqaba (symbolizing the rejection of evil), followed by the sacrifice of an animal, symbolizing Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son.

The final days of Hajj—11th, 12th, and 13th of Dhu al-Hijjah—are called the Days of Tashreeq. During these days, pilgrims continue the ritual stoning of the pillars (Ramiy al-Jamarat), complete the Tawaf (circumambulation of the Ka’bah), and offer a final farewell prayer at the Ka’bah before leaving Mecca.
